Ameritrans Capital Corporation is a specialty finance company that operates through its principal subsidiary, Elk Associates Funding Corporation (Elk). Elk is licensed by the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) to operate as a small business investment company. It is also registered as an investment company under the Investment Company Act of 1940 to make business loans. The principal activity of Elk is to make loans to, and to a limited extent, invest in, small businesses, primarily those that are majority-owned by persons, who qualify under SBA regulations as socially or economically disadvantaged. A majority of Elk's business consists of the origination and servicing of loans collateralized by taxi medallions for owners of taxi cab businesses in the markets of Chicago, Illinois; New York City, New York; Miami, Florida, and Boston, Massachusetts.
